Safety for Future Mars

Astronaut muscles waste away on long space flights reducing their capacity for physical work by more than 40%, according to research published online in the Journal of Physiology.
Professor believes if astronauts were to travel to Mars today， their ability to perform work would be compromised① and the decline could approach 50%. Crew members would fatigue② more rapidly and have difficulty performing even routine work in a space suit. The results highlight the need to design and test more effective exercise countermeasures③ on the ISS(工业标准规格) before embarking on④ distant space journeys. New exercise programmes will need to employ high resistance and a wide variety of motion⑤ to imitate the range occurring in Earth’s atmosphere.
But Professor doesn’t feel scientists should give up on extended space travel. In the shorter term, he believes efforts should be on fully using the International Space Station so that better methods to protect muscle and bone can be developed.
① compromise v. 妥协;让步
② fatigue n. 疲劳，疲乏
③ countermeasure n. 对策;反措施;反抗手段
④ embark on 登上船
⑤ motion n. 动作
